DONALD FORBES is a descendent of an historically famous family. His ancestors are a part of American folk-lore. This is relatively unimportant but it is of interest in that his painting also descends, or rather is a branch from the roots of the best produced in this country during the nineteenth century.

The courage of his pioneering ancestors, and the poetic expression of such of his romantic predecessors as Albert Ryder and Robert Newman are found in his paintings. Through his temperament and ability - - his work is not to be confused with the mass of romantic expression of today that is both literal and stylized - - - he brings to his portraits and other compositions an authentic statement of rich association. If he appears to attempt and escape from life about him, it is only because he does escape a literal translation of it.
