PREPARATION OF UNDER WALL

ASPHALTUM PAINT shall be applied to the existing hollow tile underwall. This shall be applied in 2 coats before erection of furring. After erection of furring, all holes for toggle bolts shall be stopped and painted, and edges of channels covering holes shall be [[strikethrough]] calked [[/strikethrough]] caulked with asphaltum. Asphalting shall be finished and free from holes and uncovered spots, and shall be carried 2 feet beyond internal angle at top edge of wall and into ceiling. It shall be carried 6 inches below horizontal edge to be furred. It shall be carried one foot beyond vertical edges, if possible. All metal lathing, channeling and other members adjacent to the wall to be frescoed shall be galvanized, or, if already in place, shall be coated with rust-proof paint or asphaltum. Care should be taken that asphaltum is not spilled on channels where it will come in contact with plaster scratch coat.
NOTE: All rust shall be cleaned from metal parts before application of rust-proof or asphalt paint.

FURRING AND LATHING
HORIZONTAL CHANNELS 1 1/2 X 3/8", spaced not to exceed 2' on centers securely toggle-bolted to the wall at every 2 feet.
NOTE: toggle bolt holes shall be bored clean, and shall be no larger than necessary. 
VERTICAL CHANNELS 1' X 3/8" laid flat and spaced not to exceed 12" on centers shall be bolted to horizontal channels with 1/4" diameter stove bolts.
NOTE: All furring members shall be completely cleaned of all rust and dipped-galvanized before erection, or, where such galvanization is impossible, exposed parts shall be thoroughly coated with undiluted asphalt paint after erection.
METAL LATHE shall be galvanized Clinton Cloth 2 1/2 X 2 1/2 mesh, 18 gauge. Lath shall be dipped vertically and lapped at sides not less than 1" and at ends not less than 2". Vertical laps shall be over supports only. Lath shall be wired to channels every 6 inches, and laced between supports with #18 gauge gal. annealed wire. Lath on wall shall be carried up, completely lapping down lap of ceiling, and shall be laced and tied to same. 
Laps shall not be made at internal or external angles, but shall be brought around nine inches.
