fully delivered a load of tomatoes to Beaver Falls [[Lancaster- handwritten above Beaver Falls]], but the load would have been soon forgotten, the tomatoes eaten up and no-one would have been in the least stirred by the great thoughts which fired his imagination. No-one would have remembered him, or thanked him, or have believed for a moment that he was capable of such [[strikethrough]] great ideas [[/strikethrough]] great things.

As I've said, the selling of the painting, or sculpture or whatever sort of work it is, is purely co-incidental to its creation. There is, of course, a kind of picture that's made with a view to cashing in on a market, one painted deliberately in the style of this or that great innovator, merely because that style is momentarily popular. This sort of work falls into the category of commercial enterprize. It certainly does not proceed out of the artist's inner life or imagination, nor does it add much to the imagination of the person who looks at it.

Let me just put in here that there's rather a delicate line between the business of being influenced by another artist (because his work lies in the direction of your own inclination and interests)  and that of the outright lifting of complete passages from another person's painting. The person who lifts and there are lots of them has rejected the important part of himself, the individual element which  is the source of a worthy piece of art.
