Dear Dr. Carter:

This is in reply to your letter of January 26th 1987, informing me that the faculty and trustees of Spelman College have voted unanimously to award me the Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. I am highly honored and will accept this degree that shall always be valued and treasured.

Gwen and I are looking forward to our visit to Spelman College on May 16th for the dinner and on May 17th for the Commencement exercises.

We enjoyed our most recent visit to Spelman College, viewing its many fine art works and having the opportunity to meet some of its faculty and students was, for us, a most rewarding experience.

Again, I thank you for your letter and the College for this honor. I wish Spelman College continued growth and success.

Sincerely,

Jacob Lawrence

P.S. Thank you for forwarding the three publications pertaining to Spelman College. They are greatly appreciated.
