Subject: Shipping costs of art works.

Date: August 20th 1973

I have been informed by Mr. Kenneth Hopkins, Director of the State Museum in Olympia, Washington, that the Terry Dintenfass Gallery, Inc. has requested that the George Washington Bush panels which I executed for the State of Washington be loaned to the Terry Dintenfass Gallery, Inc. for an exhibition of my work which is to take place at the Terry Dintenfass Gallery, Inc. during the fall of 1973.

I have also been informed by Mr. Hopkins that he does expect the Terry Dintenfass Gallery, Inc. to assume the shipping cost of these works from the State of Washington to New York and from New York to the State of Washington.

This communication is to inform the Terry Dintenfass Gallery, Inc. that I will not assume the shipping cost of the George Washington Bush panels and/or the shipping cost on any works to be included in this forthcoming exhibition at the Terry Dintenfass Gallery, Inc.

As I stated in my communication of August 16th (a copy of which was forwarded to you) to Ms. Luise Ross, I feel the expences [[expenses]] for the projected catalog prohibitive in view of the fact that I am to have a retrospective exhibition at the Whitney Museum in 1974 and do not feel that the type of promotion the Gallery is planning is (at this time) warranted. This also holds true as to my assuming shipping costs for works to be included in the Gallery show.

Thank you,

Jacob Lawrence
