37 Gwendolyn Bennett (1902-1981) was appointed instructor in design in 1924 for one year. She returned to the University after travel in Europe from 1926-27. James A. Porter (1905-1970), a graduate of the department was appointed instructor in drawing and painting in 1927. His land mark publication, [[underline]] Modern Negro Art [[/underline]], was published in 1943. James L. Wells (1902-1993), a master printmaker, was appointed instructor in graphics in 1929. The next year, 1930, Lois Mailou Jones (1905-) was appointed instructor in design.
