Dear Vincent:

Many thanks for your letter of 18 July and its generous offer of a picture by Alma Thomas.

Your proposal that we review the work at Howard seems fine to me, and I will make a point of attending the exhibition there. We will then choose a picture to recommend to the Board at its October meeting as a gift from you.

In regard to a future purchase, Al and I agree both on its possibility and on some of the difficulties involved. The latter revolve primarily around the problem of spending limited acquisition funds on the work of an artist already represented in the collection. If our NEA grant application is approved, however, we will certainly give further thought to Miss Thomas' work.

Best,
