Description of object/collections: "New Piece", bronze sculpture by Tony Smith. Signed on underside: "Tony Smith", and "Tony Smith 66/69 - 1/6"

Summary Examination/Treatment: The weathered surface of the sculpture is fairly homogeneous on the visible sides; it is streaked and scratched on two acute faces. In conversations with Bill Schmidt, the fabricator of the piece, it was decided that the addition of a protective coating would constitute a less radical treatment than repatination.
The piece was scrubbed in tap water with Tergitol (non-ionic detergent) using bristle brushes. After drying, the surface was rubbed with very fine steel wool to remove powdery corrosion and other irregularities. The surface was then vacuumed. The piece was spray-coated with Incralac (an acrylic protective lacquer containing a corrosion inhibitor). Pigment was added to the Incralac used to coat the disfigured faced and underside. The surface was then waxed with Butcher's Wax.
The piece should be waxed twice annually (spring and autumn). The piece is now protected for outdoor display, however, the Incralac coating may require renewal in a number of years.
