TONY SMITH'S SCULPTURE "DUCK"

"Duck" is executed in 1/4" thick A35 steel plate with overall dimensions of: 136" high, 166" wide, by 112" deep and a weight of 4,400 pounds. The sculpture is painted with Benjamin Moore Retardo, back, which has been applied over an epoxy primer, the sculpture was sandblasted before it was primed and the primer is on the exterior as well as the interior surface. Maintenance of this painted sculpture should follow the normal procedures and it should be repainted approximately every fifth year.

As with all of Tony Smith's sculptures, it is important that "Duck" be exhibited on a relatively flat plain. It is my feeling that the ideal surface is grass, indeed this is the way that most of Tony's sculpture is viewed. For a permanent installation on grass, concrete footings should be installed below the surface and a connecting stainless steel "foot" would be used to attach the sculpture to these footings. When the sculpture is installed in this manner, it will be elevated slightly above grade to allow air to circulate under the bottom edge into the interior volume of the piece.

To assist in determining the location of these concrete footings, we supply a small scale model that can be used in locating the sculpture and orientating it in the proper manner.

The design of the concrete footings is dependent on the particular site and this should be mutually agreed upon as a part of the final planning for installation.
