Intoxication peered with blood shot eyes among the anxious crouds and many and sad were the scenes where demoniac passion was goaded to deeds of darkness by this incentave occasionally a sound so ludicrous would present its self as to call a specter smile upon or features. I left Father here at the Doctors where I stopped and we had lunch Charles & Frank were here with all the teams laden with the goods I had carried my Shot Gun far enough and left it here with the other articles and walked on up to the Stewarts quite a number were there taking refuge from the fire homeless like ourselves. Later in the afternoon I walked down town the fire had been suppressed at Harrison Street - a street car brought me to 18th St as far as they ran and I walked thence over the yet hot pavements down to our old house 

a reckless gang of people pervaded the streets and mob law was greatly feared the citizens however turned out enmasse and organized vigilance and volenteer protective bodies which remained about all night. I hastened back to the Stewarts where I was to remain that night the northern sky being yet of a brilliant scarlet from the yet burning fires. 14 days after the fire this sullen light still glowed on the horison. Wagons came along up town collecting food to take down the now houseless wretches who bivouacted that night upon the cold lake shore. I in company with Young Bill from Louisvill and Harry Honore alternated the night in watching at dawn I rowled under the Piano and snached a few hours repose. Tomorrow I expect to start for N.Y. City to study at the N.A.D. Uncle John has invited me there and I expect to go
