As usual when I sit down to write the events of the past week come vividly up before me and so when I have neglected writing for a month or more I do not keep a very careful record of my actions. My life since last writing has moved on quietly I have superintended the doings here on the patch made my hay and assisted the men under my direction. My friends John Andrews and his sister have returned home for the summer and our old intimacy has been renewed a young Miss Dater from Rochester came with them to whom John is very much attached I have spent a number of days at their happy home in the city and flatter myself I have become liked by them all - In July they came down and remained a short time with me and Thursday last the 7th they came down again and remained until yesterday morning, the nights were beautifully moonlight and with the banjo and guteer [[guitar]] we wandered down in the grove among the grand old oaks spread carpets on the grass and in the glorious light sang and chatted until the moon crossed the zenith then wandered happily home - On the evening of the 7th I would not dare say what dreadful things were said under a certain oak, near where Lucy and I reclined with the dogs. I congratulated them and four happier young people it would be hard to find than the little party that roused the miserable white dog at the head of the stairs - Frank and Nannie have gone East to see the Kerfoot's started for Europe - He has not been very well this summer and we are much in hopes when removed from his wifes
