Cure, I went with mother up to the old farm house home of my grandparents at Oxford. My grandmother in looking me over said to my mother "Why, Melissa, Carroll looks like a soaked angle worm." So much for the Water cure. Still another experiment was made with boarding schools, for my Father was persistent in the belief that home was too indulgent. This time I went alone to the family of the Rev Dr Brayton at Painesville Ohio. We were only six or eight and another boy, the son of LeClaire the portrait painter, with myself were the oldest. I was filled with indignation at my letters having to be read before I could send them. In other ways also, I was treated as one of the little boys which made it intolerable. So without 'by anybody's leave' I went to the hotel from which the bus took passengers to the
