Wishes hands to work on his plantation.
Respectfully returned to Mr. N Dunn wish the information that there are no Freedmen being subsisted by the Government and under the control of this office that can be furnished him, but an agent could, no doubt find able bodied hands at ten or twelve dollars per month and rations among such as are earning a living by jobbing about.

Mason J.R.

Gaston N.C. Mar 12th 1866

Makes statement concerning a colored woman on his place and children apprenticed to him. Endorsement of Col. E. Whittlesey Asst. Comr. Respectfully referred to Major Wiley Supt Central District N.C. for action.
Respectfully returned to the Asst. Commissioner. The woman referred to reported in person at this office early last week. She is apparently three fourths white blood and one of the most intelligent Freedwoman I have yet seen.
She states that she and her children have worked for Mr. Mason, since the surrender of Johnstons Army without compensation - that Mr. Mason claims her children have been apprenticed to him by Lieut Penniman - that, if such is the fact it was done without her knowledge or consent - that she and they are capable of supporting themselves - that, on the occasion referred to Mrs. Mason assaulted her and Mr Mason, who seems so perfectly amazed at his own self-possession actually held her while Mrs Mason beat her to her entire satisfaction. The woman was very neatly dressed and stated that her frock and shoes were given her by the daughters whom Mr Mason things a reproach to their mother. The case was referred to Lieut W.F. Cox with instructions to summon the parties before him at Halifax and under such action in the claim for compensation for services and the charge of assault and battery as might be just and proper. And to report to these Hd Qrs whether the children have been apprenticed without the knowledge or consent of their mother. No report has yet been received.
