the Antique school and the life school.

The antique is as follows. From the days of Ancient Greece and Rome to the present day many fine and perfect figures have been sculptured of which numbers are in a broken and ragged condition while some are perfect. The Antique school consists of models taken from these celebrated statues &c. It contains the Gods & Goddesses, such as Venus (of love) Appollo (sun) Bacchus (wine) Diana (of the chase) Hercules Niobe Gladiators, Eve, all the Ceasars, and immense quantities of others these are all arranged in halls, alcoves, rooms, &c in promiscuous order. Some of them are immense 12 ft 10 ft 8 ft high.

Well when the promising young genius enters the Acad. with the idea of at once making his mark and fortune, he goes into this brand where he is given some head with strongly marked features which he works at for two or three weeks immensely to his own satisfaction. Then there comes an art critic (he comes 3 times per week) who probably says "Well your drawing has some good points but you had better not waste any more time on it as it is hopelessly spoiled".
