sticks to support the long-stemmed flowers, I cast about for something decorative to fulfil that function. Somehow, I hit on the idea of sticks, surmounted by wooden parrots, painted in bright red, green, and yellow. Why parrots? I cannot remember. It just seemed that they would look pretty amont xxx the flowrs. I drew the outlines on boards and Bill cut them with a hacksaw.

At the same time, I began painting flower pots. I bought them from a florist, Mr. Grohe, whose store was near the cemetery. He sold them for ten cents a piece. I worked out designs on paper ahd then transferred the designs to a flower pot in paint. My designs, for the most part, were geometrical but I also decorated the post with checks and stripes and sometimes a flower. 

Prodded by their parents, the neighbors often came to "see what Dorothy made." From time to time, someone would ask if he could buy a parrot stick or a flower pot. This gave me an idea. When summer came, instead of selling lemonade from a sidewalk stand as some of my play mates did, I found an orange crate, painted it, and used it as a display case for my wares. I charged seventy five cents for the flower pots, which, now that I think of it, was a
