coincidence. However, as a postscript to close this story, I later described the circumstances to a woman friend. She was deeply interested in occult matters and she regularly read the publications of the organizations that investigate psychic phenomena. When I finished the story, she asked if any personal possessions of the young man had been stored in the room when he left it. I recalled that several suits hung in one of the closets, along with some tennis rackets and the books he had been studying in Stanford University.

She was silent for a moment. The she said, "This is by no means unknown. Cases similar to it have been reported many times but not in the form you witnessed. It seems that the spirit sometimes returns to a place of happiness in life, especially if some valued personal possessions have been left there. I think this may very well account for what you saw. It was a form a Materialization of the young man's spirit in his own room and in his own home."

I leave it to minds better equipped than mine in this field to interpret the mystery, I insist only that it was real and not an illusion.
