As I scrimped and saved, trying to build up the funds for a University education, my father's fortunes suddenly turned for the better. The cycle of financial bad luck that had dogged him for nearly five years finally ended. He sold a ranch at a respectable profit, paid off the bank loans and other accumulated debts, and found himself again on a sound financial basis. I knew a little about this but not the details, so I was not prepared for the news awaiting me in Santa Rosa. He wrote and suggested I come here for a weekend, never mind the railway fare.
