shape at that time, the set of circumstances that combined to open the way for what became a career. First, there was unexpected opportunity to enter Berkley. There, I was soon to be introduced to the loom, the instrument with which I would translate countless design-ideas into useful and beautiful articles. Finally, I found myself with my own studio where I began the work I have been doing ever since. It all happened in a few months, a sudden coming-together of fortuitous circumstances. "There is a tide in the affairs of men..."
   In the University, I enrolled in as many courses as could be crowded into one day. The program was heavy but it did not seem so to me, being largely composed of subjects I was eager to study. What you enjoy doing can scarcely be called "Word." I undertook to study the applied arts, the history of decorative design, the history of costume, the history of textiles, flat drawing and layouts. The feast was greater than I had anticipated.
