appeared on my tiny little paycheck every month.

My first sight of a New York penthouse was the apartment of Albert and Nell Boni. Albert was then the head of the publishing house, Boni & Liveright, and today, more than 40 years later, he is still vigorously at work in a related field. The apartment reflected the tastes of the Bonis, rare books and manuscripts, Americans, and the paintings of contemporary artists, including the works of Adrien Lubbers, Diego Rivera, and many others. Nell and Albert introduced me to Diego and his wife, Freda, a picturesque pair if I ever saw one, to Upton Sinclair, Hendrik Willem van Loon, Manuel Komroff, Toni Van Horn, of Vanity Fair, and other writers. Nell and Albert generously tried to help me get a foothold in my work in New York. They introduced me to Ilonka Karaz, the great expert in stitchery, and gave a luncheon for me to which they invited the late Dorothy Shaver, the President of Lord & Taylor.
