Europe only a little more than a month. In fact, I had passed the whole summer there.

I immediately began planning to return in the following summer. The travelling had greatly broadened my concepts of design. I had seen just a glimpse of the work of two men, the great weaver, Rodier, and Paul Poiret, whose printed fabrics with oversize figures, were just beginning to attract attention. I decided that the next trip to Paris would be devoted largely to learning everything I could from studying their techniques.

Back in New York, my life slipped back into the familiar groove, teaching by day, attending classes and weaving virtually every night.

I continued to make and sell the pram robes. But, as has happened many times since then, I felt the itch to try something new, something more sophisticated. That something proved to be tweeds. I started weaving
