lost cousin. I knew no one who could introduce me to Rodier the great weaver, so I simply walked into the building where he worked, said I was a student, which was essentially true, and asked if I could see some of his work. He had recently been in India and it was interesting to see how the journey had influenced him. He had distilled from Indian art forms the designs that now appeared in his weaving. I studied his work closely, examining the various weaves. Similarly, I went to the places where I could see Poiret's prints. This type of design was not entirely new to me; I had studied screen prints in the course on the history of textiles in the University. Poiret's designs, however, were the most modern I had ever seen. When the time came to return to New York, I felt that the summer had been profitable and that my understanding of design has been greatly advanced.
