It then became apparent that our respective families were not to be present at the wedding and would play no part in it. Leon had arranged for the ceremony to take place at the Carlton Hotel in Washington. This did not disturb me. I had no desire for a large church wedding with maids-of-honor and all manner of goings-on. It was typical of Leon to arrange a simple, unostentatious ceremony. On a February day, Nick and Tinney went with us to Washington. Leon's best man a Colonel Cameron, was awaiting us at the hotel. (I don't believe I ever knew his first name; Leon always called him "Cam.") An American flag was stretched across the wall facing us. Odd note, I thought.

We then went to the Congressional Country Club for the honeymoon, hardly a romantic spot. Leon played golf every day. I tagged along, although I was no golfer. Later, too please Leon, I would take golfing lessons in California.
