Beautiful painted furniture filled the solarium and some lovely Japanese prints hung on its walls. The four corner rooms were round and I soon discovered the difficulty in trying to decorate round rooms with paintings. Like most brides, I felt compelled to do some re-decorating, to add a few touches of my own to my home, but my efforts were not effective. Leon liked the apartment as it was and thereforedisplayed [[therefore displayed]] little interest in my suggestions for changes.

He had a staff of four servants to which, as a consequence of an accident of mine, he added a fifth, a chauffeur. In the hands of the staff, the house ran like a well-oiled machine, quietly and with complete efficiency. Although I had little experience and less talent for planning meals, I considered it my wifely duty to assume that responsibility. Here, again, my efforts came to nothing. The housekeeper was a dear, capable Scottish woman, Mrs. Middleton, who gently and tactfully made it clear that I was not needed
