with a book immediately after dinner. He belonged to Colyphon, a group devoted to rare books and fine printing. 

I, on the other hand, am very gregarious and although giving dinner parties was not much of a substitute for meaningful work, I determined to use the perfect facilities available in the apartment for such affairs. Leon never objected, but I sense that he went along reluctantly. We often were invited by his relatives to their homes and almost invariably he refused.

His life centered largely around the golf course, the riding paths in Golden Gate Park, and his office. I played no real part in any of these. I did take golfing lessons, hoping to become his companion in that at least. To my surprise, I developed a certain amount of proficiency but never a great interest in the game. More often than not, while playing a course, I found myself gathering wild flowers instead of concentrating on the next shot.
