Thanks to Leon, I came to know more about the wonders of my native state, the enormous variety and the contrasts in its scenery and topography. This came largely from a flight in a plane he rented. His nephews, Lloyd and Sidney, and their wives went with us. The pilot first flew around Mt. Whitney and then, turning south, over the savage, forbidding floor of Death Valley. The colors were breathtaking and I duly put them in a sketchbook, the enormous contrasts between blue, snow-capped mountains and naked rocks and desert. A successful line of fabrics woven in "desent" and "California" colors was to come from the inspiration I
