He replied, brightly, "Ah, that? That is the fee of the two gentlemen for the dancing last night." In other words, our charming companions were gigolos! "Well, Helen Sighed, "travel is so enlightening I always say."

We returned to Paris and Helen sailed for New York a few days later. It never occurred to me to go to one of the great Paris hotels, although of course I could now afford it. I went straight to my little Hotel de l'Universite. It seemed ages since I had last stayed there but, happily, nothing changed. At times, in fleeting moments, I felt as though the 10years had fallen away magically and that I was the wide-eyed art teacher seeing Paris for the first time.

A cable came from Clare Potter saying she was about to sail from New York and asking me to make hotel reservations for her. Clare had established herself, long since, as a leading designer of sports clothes. Her name was a by-word on Seventh Avenue, the heart of the dress
