My first studio, not counting the attic at home, was a single room in the rear building at 526 Powell Street in San Francisco. It was adequate, spacious enough for my two looms and the light was good. Anyway, it was the best I could afford. There were to be times when it would be touch-and-go to pay rent on it. My experience in selling hand woven articles to the stores in New York had given me a certain amount of confidence, but New York was New York, and there could be no certainty that I would have any success in San Francisco.
