The dyer to whom I went for "Strange and special shades" was Mr. Zelphos, a master dyer. He had a small shop in an alley in San Francisco. He was a valuable adjunct to the work of the studio because he could get the value of the colors we wanted exactly, working like a medieval alchemist until he his [[hit]] upon the right color brew. He loved our colors, even though they meant extra hard work for him to achieve them.

It never was easy, of course. However, the joy of creating beautiful and useful textiles, and of working out designs and textures, far outweighed the backbreaking aspects and the heartaches over the insoluble problem that occasionally appeared. Needless to say, I was happy. The drifting, purposeless days were gone, never to return.
