Dear Mr. Rauschenberg:

In the past you have been photographed by Henri Cartier-Bresson and interviewed by Dorothy Seckler for the beginning of a Rauschenberg Collection in the Archives of American Art. Now we very much want to have your papers on deposit with us. The Archives officially becomes a branch of the Smithsonian on the first of the year, and so it is ever more important to make as complete a documented record as possible of American art past and present.

Should you not with to part with the papers themselves, perhaps you would allow us to borrow the material to make a microfilmed record. We could do it here in the city all at one time or over a period of time.

I do hope you will agree to this project. I should be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Sincerely,

Butler Coleman
