Lee Krasner Chronology October 27, Lenore Krasner is born in Brooklyn, New York, youngest of Joseph and Anna Krasner's one son and [[crossed out]] four [[crossed out]] six daughters, and their only child born in the United States. Father came to America from a small village near Odessa, Russia, set up a food shop and was followed by his wife. and their children. Chooses art [[crossed out]] over secretarial work [[crossed out]] as a career. Attends Girls High in Brooklyn for one year waiting to enter Washington Irving high School in Manhattan where she majors in art. 1926- Attends Women's Art School of Cooper Union. 28-or Studies under Victor Perard who has her do 1927-29 plates for a textbook -- her first payment art. The Krasner family moves to [[crossed out]] Huntington, [[crossed out]] Greenlawn, Long Island, Lee stays in Brooklyn with her sister Ruth in order to continue school. 1929- Attends National Academy of Design. 32 Charles Curian Ivon Olinsky Sidney Dickinson - Neilson Studies under Leon Kroll. Submits self-portrait painted in woods of [[crossed out]] Huntington, [[crossed out]] Greenlawn, LongIsland, for review by committee for promotion. She is promoted on probation. 1929 Goes to newly opened Museum of Modern Art where she first encounters Matisse and others from the Paris School. This contacts deeply affects her ideas about art, (and she begins a new series of paintings.)? Works nights as a waitress at the Sam Johnson restaurant, night club on Third Street in Greenwich Village. 1933 Considers becoming art teacher. Takes courses 1934 at CCNY. Attends life drawing, Greenwich 1935 House. (Job Goodman) Government creates the WPA Federal Arts Project, which appeals to her more than teaching and waitressing. 1936 First meets Jackson Pollock at Artists 1937 Union loft party. 52W. 9th St. Where? 52 W. 8th 1938 Studies with Hans Hofman. Meets Clement 40 Greenburg through Harold and May Rosenberg. 1938- Becomes an assistant to the muralist Max 42 Spivak in the WPA Federal Arts Project Mural Division. Paints cityscapes and factory scenes.
