Major Gen. O.O. Howard,

Dear Sir,
The undersigned who is about to be mustered out of the service as paymaster in the U.S. Army, desires to secure the appointment of Superintendent of schools for Freedmen in connection with the Freedmen's Bureau.

He is 35 years of age, a graduate of Amhurst College in 1855, and has since that time been a teacher in the High school at Lowell Mass. He also taught before leaving college 6 winters in the district schools of Vermont
