The colored men all say they are willing to do any thing they can, and that all they ask is, such treatment as any man would naturally desire to receive from his employer.

These statements were made in the presence of the Capt. of the "Diamond" and he did not seem to be able to refute them.

Dr. N.J. Pettijohn and Mr. Vandenburgh, Asst. Superintendent at Mason's Island were present with me and heard all of the above, and they with me believe that the colored men have been unfairly dealt with and have just cause for Complaint.
