service every way.  I believe that hundreds of excellent teachers from the North may be induced to engage in the service under encouragement from the Government, who would not go for a Society.  The Societies will do much, but cannot proceed on a scale commensurate with the vast demand.

Second: influence by lectures and private intercourse both with the educated and  uneducated at the South to produce in them correct views on the subject.  Much may be done with the leading minds in Southern society to bring the free school system into favor with them.

As to the uneducated, if my experience is any test, they are ripe and ready for the movement.

Third: the formation of Educational Associations all over the South, to insure at least a part of the money to pay expenses.
