Head Quarters 10th Army Corps. In the field
Bermuda Hundred Va.
June 12, 1864.
Brig. Gen. Hatch
U.S. Vols
Department of the South

My Dear Sir:
I deem it my duty and it is a great pleasure to inform you that you have in my old schoolmate and dear friend Major B. W. Thompson 32nd U.S. Colored Troop now on Folley Island, S.C. a Christian Gentleman of great intelligence, industry, and energy and an excellent experienced soldier.
He resided for many years before the war in East Florida with which country and people I suppose him the better acquainted than any officer in your department.
Please make such use of this letter as you deem best for the interests of the service and the interests of my friend Thompson.

Very Respectfully Your Obt. Servt.
G.B. Brooks
Major and A.D.C.
