New Orleans July 30th 1866,

Mr John Sheafer

Dear Father

I received your Kind and welcome letter it gives me so much Happiness to hear that you are well. Your Kind letter found me in good Health, I sold my Horse in Lancaster, I got one Hundred and fifteen Dollars for Him.  I Had to Pay Seventy five Dollars, to the man I got him of.  I Paid my shoe Bills which was 8,50 I Bor'ed some money from a young man which I Payed Back to him. it was 20,00, He was going away and I had to Pay him, the remainder I spent for me, wacks [[wax]] which I wanted, tell the man I was hired with, or ask him if he Paid the Blacksmith Bill Which He said he would, if he did not Pay, if you will see if Payed and as soon as you write let me no if it is settled, or not.  Dear father I received the $10,00 which you sent me in Your letter. I was much pleased to get it I was in need of mony at the time I received it. I' dont drink anything Whatever except Cold water, or Coffee. it would do to get Drunk here if he gets drunk, He will get put in the gard House. I like it vey [[very]] well, we Have such nice Officers in our Company. there is a great deal of sickness here
