pause to admire. Yet if you get a beeline perspective on the building and the Tour Eiffel beyond, a kind of artistic metal aerial brotherhood is established between the two - the single connection that UNESCO has with the neighborhood. The English sculptor Henry Moore's garden figure, with holes, and the French sculptor Jean Arp's abstraction are not yet placed - perhaps luckily, for the Mexican Rufino Tamayo's fresco in one of the larger conference rooms was snubbed by the crtics as being "lost in its own loose red colors." It, at least, is the only decoration with a title - "Prometheus Bringing Fire." The Italian Afro's painting outside the seventh-floor restaurant was called "a discolored daub;" the Chilean Matta's canvas in the bar was said to look like "unidentifiable machines;" and only the Hungarian Brassai's splendid photomontage of reeds and rushes, also in the bar, pleased the critics, as a reliable creation of nature "amid so much artistic speculation."

The uncontestedly admired aesthetic contribution is the large Japanese garden, planned by Isamu Noguchi, on the Avenue de Ségur side, with its upright green and gray stones worn to contemplative shapes of beauty by time at work on nature, and with its dwarf conifers - both stones and trees having been presented to UNESCO by the Japanese government. There are panels of running water atop walls, and an arched stone bridge leading nowhere except into the imagination. In the apogee of criticism of the whole UNESCO building and its contents, Le Monde's critic finally said sharply, "This new aggrandizement of UNESCO demanded the destruction of eighty-three trees on the Place de Fontenoy. The future will decide the worth of this functional architecture, denuded of aesthetics and sensitivity." This seems to bring us back to the old-fashioned criterion that only God can make a tree.

The new Brigitte Bardot film, "En Cas de Malheur" ("In Case of Emergency"), is attracting Paris crowds willing to queue up on the sidewalk to see her - in this case literally to see all of her for a few seconds when, leaving the bathtub and the camera lens behind her, she heads natively for her bed, as devoid of clothes in that brief, energetic, naked scamper as she is of lubricity. She has also attracted astonished praise from movie critics and the public in general for her unexpected ability to act. Something like twenty-four movie roles ago, her Franco-

You'll probably love it. Unless, of course, you happen to prefer your rye straight. Cara-Ry is a crisp rye wafer with an unexpected touch of caraway that puts it in a class by itself. The perfect base for spreads, cheese, or just plain butter - at lunchtime, cocktail-time, snack-time.
