From taxi saw the Secession bldg with metal openwork globe between towers  So much smaller than fotos seemed to show--& all manner of art nouveau bits. Traffic heavy at 3:30 pm- & the trees in front of [[Stubeuring?]] not there. only willows by Donau Canal but too low to see from Madame Searing up street. Much street bldg everywhere. But something very good even if ringstrasse not legible from a taxi. 50 S for taxi! Room impeccably clean- [[?]] modern bit. Asked way to St Stephan's & picked up a letter from Franzeska Read as I walked; she has left town for 2 weeks with relations. How horribly
sad. I held back tears & walked fast to St. Stephan's Saw a cafe in front of church also foreground hidden by heavy machinery tearing
up street. All tables taken 
I looked in display case & saw a ausse Tart, smelled the wonderful coffee so stood & waited & read address book & planned how to see Franzi. I
