Now Gigi sat restlessly on her little white bed, that had already been turned down for the night. Christi rested in a chair nearby. Neither of them had spoken for a few minutes. but the nurse was doing a great deal of thinking. She was quite sure that Miss Hunt would not approve of her niece peeping. Besides, she had promised to go to the movies at eight-thirty.

"Gigi, this is all nonsense!" she began trying to look stern. "You've probably gotten the whole story all mixed up anyway. Your Aunt doesn't know any prince."

The bell rang. Gigi was up in a flash. A few seconds passed before Aunt Nancy's footsteps could be heard passing the child's room. Then, Gigi tiptoed quickly to her door, which had been purposely left ajar, to give a full view of the foyer, when Aunt Nancy opened the door. She turned and beckoned to Christi who needed very little persuasion to follow her.

There stood in the doorway a light brown-skinned man with grey eyes in a soldier's uniform.

"Isn't he handsome?" whispered Gigi and then her big brown eyes clouded with a sadness. He did look so much like her own daddy, whom she had not seen since the day he left for Korea. One day, a few months ago, Aunt Nancy had cried and said he would not be coming home again.

Gigi had never known any other mother than Aunt Nancy. Her own mother had died when she was just a year old, but Aunt Nancy had left college and taken such good care of her that she had never missed not having one.
