keep the work you want, or would consider, or desires, an exchange. You have my permission, - although I rather doubt that it is one he would desire to relinquish.

Of course this long log has been to just to fill in those things I wanted to talk to you about when you got conscientious about my telephone bill. Probably I will be embarrassed when I get your letters and find that the whole thing is unnecessary.

I should mention one other factor. Janis and I had only a brief oral discussion about whether I would pay him a third for paintings sold out of my studio. It was never resolved, - although he protested when my dealer " built up an artist" he usually expected his cut. My reminder: - that I had no desire to sell work from my studio because it interfered with my privacy, but I was already known, could sell my work rather effectively when I wished to; - and that he had many men to deal with and could only spend an irresponsibly small time on any one, made a financially dubious arrangement for me. I pointed out to him at least three people who were, or had been, considering purchases in the coming months, and let the matter rest if he cared to consult with them... Well, he is in Europe; I will have to get into action myself if I am going to hope to be able to work and move from this placid desert; - there the whole issue rests. But I will add that I would consider any picture bought by you which hung in your show as being already under option, and would not be required to pass through other hands. I believe this is only fair to both of us. Let me know if you think otherwise. I will clear up the issue when I see him.

I hope that I will be able to get back to New York this fall, but I will have to remember to keep away from all but a very few people. It is a wonderful town, if one just limits his associations and expands his activities. So be prepared to see me if something works out. Now you know how to keep me at the proper distance -----.

Best of luck to both of you and have a good cool trip somewhere as soon as you can. But not in this direction. Its a hundred degrees plus out here nearly every day. Ahhhh that desert wind -----, that pungent sage ------, those dry old bones,------, wonder where the hell they came from? -----. But its a great country, in every direction, and I love it even when it burns me blue.

Yours always,
Clyff
