Dear Barbara Chase-Riboud,

During a recent conversation with our mutual friends,
Elaine and Emanuel Benson, your name was mentioned
as someone I should meet when I got to Paris in July
--hence your address. I told the Bensons that I had only recently become acquainted with your work through your show at Bertha Schaefer's, but felt at once you would be someone I would be most honored to know. We had been in shows together (Dakar) and of course are currently showing work at the Whitney and Newark, but I had not seen your sculpture in the "flesh" until the Schaefer show. It was a beautiful show by a very powerful artist.

Apart from a much needed rest from teaching (I am at Rhode Island School of Design), my main purpose in coming to Paris is to bring some canvases to the American Embassy for their show at the Information Center (?) and to see some old friends.

I plan to arrive on July 9th for a stay of at least a month; one week in Switzerland is the only side-trip planned and that will be from July 22 to July 27. I sincerely hope I will have the pleasure of meeting you and your husband for at least a drink.

My Paris address will be: Hotel Du Lys
23 Rue Serpente
Paris, 6eme

With best wishes,

Robert Reid.

P.S. Where would be the best place to buy stretchers in Paris?
