January 24, 1976 Mr. Clair Young 811 South Main Salinas, California 93901 Dear Clair, Several weeks ago I sent you a bill for the painting you agreed to buy. Except for you Christmas card, I have heard nothing from you. Friendship aside, I am addressing you as one businessman to another: I must have the payment. You asked me last year to wait two months before asking for payment. I kept my end of the bargain. Like everybody else, my expenses have gone up and I too need all the money that is due to me. Am I right perhaps in thinking that you do not intend to pay for the painting until you have sold it to a client? I hope that is not the case, since you are the one who is buying the painting from me; you are not then my dealer selling this painting for me--certainly not for $550! Please let me know by return mail if you will send the full amount or if I may expect a monthly payment of at least $100 until the bill is settled. Don't let us drag this out too long; it could be irreparable harm to our friendship. Sincerely, Robert Reid 233 Lafayette Street New York, New York 10012
