Indians To Open Meetings Monday

Two hundred and fifty Indians from 13 states and 40 tribal groups start arriving here this weekend for the 10th annual convention of the National Congress of American Indians. The convention, being held in Phoenix for the first time this year, will be from Monday through Wednesday.

MRS. HELEN PETERSON of Denver, executive director and an Oglala Sioux herself, has already registered at Hotel Westward Ho, headquarters for the meetings.

She has 200 Allie Reynolds atuographed baseballs to give out to delegates to the convention. The New York Yankee's pitcher, a Creek Indian, couldn't attend, but sent the souvenirs.

MUCH DISCUSSION is expected to be given to the government's proposed withdrawal of support from Indians, Mrs. Peterson said.

Clarence Wesley, chairman of the San Carlos Apache Tribal Council, will sound the keynote at the first business session Monday afternoon.
