Respectfully returned to Mr. Edwd C. Whaley, and request that he will state on this paper whether the objection within mentioned is a personal objection of his own, or whether he makes it as a member of the Edisto Board of Supervisors and in behalf of the land owners whom he represents. Mr Edwd C. Whaley is also requested to state whether he means by the within communication to say that he refuses to serve on the said Board of Supervisors on account of the fact that one member of the Board is a colored man. This paper to be returned.

My objection is on behalf of the landowners, whose I represent
I do not refuse to serve on the board as at present organized, but serve expecting that another appointment, conforming with Gen Howards order, will be made.
