I have met with several planters who told me that their lands were doing well. The majority however complain. I think that much of the restlessness and instability of the colored people on plantations is attributable to planters themselves. Some are incapable of managing the business of a Plantation well. Others are either too indolent, too proud, or too much umbraged at recent changes to take hold of business and conduct it properly. They leave the colored people to do as they please and then complain because they have not done differently. In many places the whites are entertaining fears of an outbreak on the part of the blacks, to occur about Christmas  Some are sending their families away; and many more would do so if they could
