I have taken great pains at every point visited, to endeavor to awaken an interest among the people, in the subject of education. At a few places something is being done. At Canton one or two schools have been established some time. At Brandon an interesting school of nearly forty (40) scholars, was being taught by a young colored woman from Mobile. She needs protection. Oposition was manifested. At Forrest a colored Sergeant was teaching a small numbers of scholars. At Meridian two schools were in operation taught by colored men, neither of whom were qualified. The School buildings were very poor. Each teacher had about thirty (30) scholars.
