Senator Sharkey, in his address before the same body, expressed, great fears on his part, as to the safety, and permanency of republican constitutions. He also said that he would favor restriction, rather than extension of the election franchise. The colored people everywhere feel much interest in the subject of education. What they need is encouragement, assistance in organizing schools, and a supply of judicious, liberal minded, unobtrusive and, well qualified teachers. It affords me pleasure to state, that some of the white people favor, the education of the colored people. I have met with planters who declared to me it was their intention to establish schools on their own plantations for the benefit of the children of their laborers. My opinion is that attention to the education of the colored children will have
