Dear Mrs. Tremaine:

Following our recent telephone conversation about insurance valuations on the two works by Stuart Davis which you are generously lending to the Stuart Davis Memorial Exhibition, I asked the National Collection of Fine Arts to give me the valuations on Davis paintings of similar date and size that will be included in the exhibition.

The two which seem nearest to your For Internal Use Only are the oil Arboretum by Flashbulb, 1942, 18 x 36", $15,000; and Mellow Pad, oil, 1945-51, 26 x 42", $20,000. Since For Internal Use Only is a little earlier than Mellow Pad, but slightly larger, I should think that $20,000 would be a fair valuation.

Regarding your gouache Composition (1863), three gouaches of about this time but somewhat smaller are insured for $3,500, $6,000 and $1,000 respectively. In view of the wide difference between these figures, may I suggest $5,000 as a reasonable valuation for your picture.

With appreciation of your generous cooperation,

Sincerely yours,

Lloyd Goodrich
Director
