BATTLE OF BENNINGTON, AUGUST 16, 1777. 
Colonel Baum, Hessian commander of Burgoyne's attempt to collect Bennington's military supplies, was mortally wounded along with Colonel Pfister, leader of the Tories. They were carried to David Mathews' house where they both died. Painting by Roy Williams. Bennington Museum, Bennington, Vermont.

Dear Demon loner -we're at Benn. now for 2 wks, while Bob gives a seminar. We also did the Yale bit (Norfolk). for 2 days. Day after tomorrow we return to Princetown, *sea, studios, no people, lobsters until mid-Sept. Children & us grown-ups all surviving the summer.
