VINCENT SMITH

Born:  Brooklyn, New York, 1929

Educated: New York Public Schools

Background: 
1945: leaves school at 16 and goes to work for lackawanna Railroad. Travels throughout North Eastern States.

1947: In the U.S. Army. Is stationed in the South.

1952: Decides to become an artist. Resigns from job at U.S. Post Office.

1953: studies at Art Students League. Teachers include Reginald Marsh.

1954: Studies with Joseph Konzal at the Brooklyn Museum Art School.

1955: Awarded scholarship to Skowhegan School Maine. Studies with Ben Shahn, and Sidney Simon. Exhibits in group shows at ACA Gallery and Roko Gallery, New York.

1956: One Man shows at Macon Street Library, Brooklyn and Market Place Gallery, New York.

1957: Awarded a John Hay Whitney Fellowship in Painting.

1963-4: Travels and paints through the South.

1965: Exhibits-
Lorriane Hansberry Exhibit, New York Negro Arts Festival, Yonkers National Arts Club, New York

1966: Contemporary Arts Gallery, New York Harlem Council of the Arts, New York

Mr. Smith is exhibiting over 40 oils, watercolors and etchings.
