Dear Professor Donaldson,

As a post-doctoral Fellow at Duke University, I am working on a study of cross-cultural ties between African American painting and African art. Part of this project entails interviews with artists, both in the U.S. and West Africa. In looking at the influence of African ideas, aesthetic styles, and thought upon African American artists, I am interested in the Africobra group and its relationship to the "Pan-Africanists" now active around Howard. Barry Gaither of the NCAAA suggested that I contact you, because of your central role in these artistic-political developments. I would be very interested to meet you, to discuss the growth from COBRA 1968 to the present.

If you are able to spare some time, I can come up to D.C. and perhaps we could get together. I plan to be in D.C. twice this fall: from Saturday-Monday (or Tuesday), October 21-23; and the first weekend in November. If any of these dates would be o.k. for you, please do let me know. I have also written to Al Smith, and maybe the three of us could meet at one time, if that is mutually convenient. At any rate, feel free to call me collect at (919) 286-7378, any evening. Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours truly,

Peter Mark
